New Line Cinema began as a New York-based film distributor in 1967 under the
leadership of founder Robert Shaye. Eventually branching out into film
production, the company's first major success was the 1981 film
Polyester by John Waters. Once referred to as "The House that Freddy
Built", the studio found great success with horror villain Freddy Krueger
and the Nightmare on Elm Street series in the '80s and early '90s.
Acquired by Ted Turner in 1992 for a tidy $550 million, New Line has since
produced blockbuster flicks such as the Austin Powers series and
critically acclaimed films such as Boogie Nights and Magnolia.
